Computational Chemist

Hello, I’m Dr. Syed Ali Abbas Abedi, a computational chemist passionate about molecular engineering, photostability, and quantum simulations. I’m currently a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD), where I design organic fluorophores for photoacoustic imaging and photothermal therapy, merging quantum chemical modeling with real-world biomedical applications.

During my Ph.D. at SUTD under Prof. Xiaogang Liu, I focused on the excited-state conformational dynamics of organic dyes, using methods like TD-DFT, CASSCF, and CASPT2 to unravel mechanisms behind ultralong phosphorescence and photoinduced processes.

In 2023, I broadened my research horizons as a Visiting Scholar at University College London and Queen Mary University of London, collaborating with Prof. Rachel Crespo-Otero to simulate excited-state decay pathways in solid-state systems and develop photostable materials. These experiences sharpened my expertise in nonadiabatic dynamics, machine learning for molecular design, and advanced photochemical simulations.

My long-term vision is to harness computation to create smarter, more sustainable materials, whether in biomedical diagnostics, optoelectronics, or environmental sensing.

Let’s connect and collaborate on reshaping molecular science for the future.
